Months and Months Away
At UFc 116 Brock Lesnar showed the will of a true champion, weathering the storm that is Shane Carwin's XXXXL gloves for a full five minutes, from the bottom position, against the cage, with a nasty gash on his forehead after being rattled and dropped with a glancing uppercut. Lesnar came out in the second round and submitted Carwin with a text book side choke...perfect jiu jitsu from the self-described caveman gladiator.
Noteworthy from UFC 116: Chris Leben pulled off a huge come from behind, triangle choke victory as time was about to expire, beating Yoshihiro Akiyama with seconds to spare.
At UFC 117 Anderson Silva put on another classic performance pulling off the come-from-behind triangle choke victory in the fifth round against obnoxious contender, Chael Sonnen. Sonnen dropped Silva early in the fight, stunning all onlookers. He took Silva down in every round, exactly how he said he would. And it looks as though he was on his way to doing the impossible - defeating the UFC champion with the most consecutive title defenses. However, Silva was too resilient and put that "cracker jack" Nogueria black belt to work.
Noteworthy from UFC 117: Dos Santos put on a nice performance, soundly beating "Big Country" to the punch.
More recently, at UFC 118 Frankie Edgar (Jersey, represent!) made it look easy defeating BJ Penn for the second time. Penn has clearly lost a step, or two, or three...but Edgar had clearly improved exponentially as well. His speed and footwork are unmatched and it will take someone very special to knock him off his perch.
Noteworthy from UFC 118: Gray Maynard secured his title shot with a lopsided victory over Kenny Florian. Randy Couture did what was expected by immediately taking down and then submitting the sacrificial lamb that was James Toney. Nate Diaz brutally beat hometown favorite Marcus Davis to a pulp then choked him into unconsciousness...maybe pride is dangerous to your health. And lastly, one hometown favorite made good as Joe Lauzon destroyed Gabe Ruediger.
Back on the train now....so much MMA so little time.
The Ever Changing Business World of MMA
HDNet, who has marketed itself as the one-stop source for all things MMA, was shut out from the largest brand in the industry. But after three long years of bickering between Cuban and White, the two have reached a preliminary agreement allowing HDNet to access UFC events and use footage.
Only time will tell how much Zuffa is permitting but this is a step in the right direction for HDNet. They have been providing some of the best MMA and kickboxing the world has never seen including events from DREAM, World Victory Road, Sengoku and most K-1 events.

VAI CAVALO! VAI CAVALO!
Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum is probably the happiest man in the world this week. After barely even being discussed in the media week leading up to his clash with Fedor Emelianenko, Werdum shocked everyone with a 69 second submission victory over the once-beaten Russian.
Fedor came in early looking strong and determined to win quickly. Showing no respect for Werdum's stand up, Fedor jumped in throwing caution to the wind and landing a few glancing hooks before Werdum ditched his standing position for a more familiar one, his back on the mat.
Fedor followed Werdum down, defended an armbar nicely, looked to pass to side control, and then...it began. Werdum grabbed hold of an arm, walked his legs up and attacked with an armbar. As Fedor defended, Werdum adjusted his position to lock his legs. He locked in the figure four and worked to tighten the choke while still attacking the arm. "Vai Cavalo!" which the Werdum team described as Fabricio's ability to attack with multiple submissions at once, was the key to victory. Without the armbar, the triangle wouldn't have been enough to force the tap and vice versa.
The stoic Russian tapped a single time on Werdum's leg and Big John saved him from unconsciousness. It was the Russian's first loss in over nine and a half years. It was Werdum's biggest win to date and he happily offered a rematch in Russia.
What a shake up, Lesnar vs Carwin will now determine the top heavyweight in the sport. Buckle up.

Coming Up
Fedor and Werdum - "The Last Emperor" better bring a special performance to the table with what Zuffa has in store as a rebuttal the following weekend.
Cris Cyborg ought to maul another sacrificial challenger. (Why not let her and her husband sort out marital issues in the cage..it might be more competitive)
Scott "The Comeback Kid" Smith is hoping to put his hands to use against the versatile and fancy-footed Cung Le, for the second time.
UFC 116
Brock and Shane July 3rd. - 600 pounds of muscle and testosterone in a cage with a combined 16 ounces of "protection." Somebody is going down hard.
Chris "The Cat Smasher" Leben takes his second fight in as many weeks, stepping in for an injured Wanderlei Silva to square off with "The Sexy" Akiyama.

WEC 49
Eddie Wineland put on a great performance against Will Campuzano. The end was drawn out but so damn exciting. Will got dropped, recovered, swang for the fences, but in the end a vicious right straight to the plexus put him down for good in Round 2.
Chris Horodecki put on a clinic against Danny Downes in what looked like a "Meet me at the flag pole at 3 o'clock" battle. Horodecki outclassed Danny Boy and ended it with a rear choke in Round 3.
Josh Grispi looked slick against L.C. Davis, locking up a tight guillotine in Round 1. Nice performance.
Mark Hominick and Yves Jabouin put on the fight of the night in this barn-burner. Eventually, Hominick was too much for Yves to handle. The end came midway through Round 2.
Jamie Varner probably cried all night about his Draw with Kamal Shalorus. The Iranian showed a hefty beard throughout the fight, eating everything Varner threw at him. He even broke Varner's hand with his head. Three inside low kicks to the sack and a broken hand later, Varner got taken down in the third. While Shalorus was entertaining and as humble as a man in his profession can possibly be, he deserved to lose that one. Rematch should be fun.
Good fights, confusing main event outcome and another nice production from the Zuffa folks.
TUF Finale
Dennis Siver eaked out a decision against Spencer Fisher. Two guys with no real chance of title contention but they put on a great display of heart and talent.
ATTENTION PASSENGERS...the A-Train has been delayed...by CHRIS "THE CRIPPLER" LEBEN! I love this guy's fights. He dragged Simpson into a brawl that he had no place in and ended the right with some potent punches.
Matt Hamill rallied from a bad first round, a broken hand, a staph infection and an eye-poke to earn a Majority Decision over Keith Jardine. It was a bloody mess but a much-needed win for my favorite deaf fighter.
Last but certainly not least...Court McGee is indeed alive and well. His won the finale with a Round 2 rear choke. This guy has quite a story and it speaks volumes about what passion and dedication can do for a person. Deeper than fight sports that's for sure.
Good fights.
Old News
Chuck got hung out to dry by a one-armed Rich Franklin. Rich broke his ulna blocking a kick early in Round 1. As Chuck tried to close the round with a bang he left himself exposed and Franklin capitalized. A short right hook and a few follow ups put an end to Chuck's evening, and maybe his UFC career.
A self-fulfilling prophecy from Pat Berry. After dropping the Croatian kickboxer twice in Round 1, Barry gassed and got the lumber laid on him. In Round 3 Cro Cop took advantage sinking a rear choke for the victory. Too many Bagel Bites and hero-worship for Barry to realize his full potential.
Martin Kampmann looked great against Paulo Thiago, just beating him everywhere.
Ben Rothwell grinded out a decision against Gilbert Yvel (snoozer)
Carlos Condit beat the clock to earn a stoppage against the rising young Rory MacDonald with only 7 seconds left.
Teammates Evan Dunhma and Tyson Griffin scraped a nice one with Dunham taking the W and setting himself up for future title contention.
Mac Danzig was robbed and handed a loss he did not deserve on a bogus choke stoppage.
Better than the last few PPVs.

Catch Up
Quick run down for last weekend's MMA action. Beginning with UFC 114.Thursday, May 27, 2010
UFC 114: Rampage vs Rashad
It's been a long time coming for this one.
Much has been said about the upcoming Rampage vs Rashad fight. Whether the animosity is legitimate or simply a marketing tool for an influx of pay-per-view buys to boost a card without a title fight...who cares?! So long as somebody ends up on the floor.
Let's just give it a quick look and some predictions.
Quinton Jackson vs Rashad Evans
Both good wrestlers, heavy handed and not very kind to one another. I expected Rashad to pick his shots from the outside, throwing leg kicks until Rampage moves in and lands a series of nasty hooks.
Prediction: Rampage via TKO, Round 2.
Michael Bisping vs Dan Miller
A big step up in competition for Miller in this one. I expect Bisping to use his striking to assault Miller. When Miller gets the takedown, look out for Bisping's jiu jitsu to be put on display. More importantly, look for Miller's defense.
Prediction: Jim Miller via Unanimous Decision
Todd Duffee vs Mike Russow
Russow is a tough wrestler, who may be able to put Duffee on his back. Duffee is 260 pounds of athletic muscle and holds a 7 second KO in his last outing. he doesn't want you to buy into his surrounding hype just yet. Why don't you wait until after this performance to hype him up?
Prediction: Todd Duffee via TKO, Round 1.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueria vs Jason Brilz
Do I have to say much? To say Lil Nog is talented is a gross understatement. Watch his fight with Shogun from PRIDE. Incredible.
Prediction: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira via TKO, Round 1.
Diego Sanchez vs John Hathaway
Sanchez is a gamer. At first, I was not a fan. And I am still hesitant to back him fully, but he's got a gas tank and the heart of a lion. Hathaway has a big reach advantage and better use it if he wants to survive. I doubt he will.
Prediction: Diego Sanchez via Unanimous Decision.
Amir Sadollah vs Dong Hyun Kim
TUF winner, Sadollah hasn't exactly been thrown to the wolves just yet. His Muay Thai looks great but I think he better not rely too heavily on the thai clinch or he'll get tossed on his head by "The Stun Gun." After intial doubt, I'm going with the Korean.
Prediction: Dong Hyun Kim via Unanimous Decision.
Efrain Escudero vs Dan Lauzon
These guys have a history, however, the main story has been Dan's beef with his brother Joe Lauzon, a fellow UFC lightweight. Joe thinks Dan doesn't take camp seriously for the entire duration. Well, he better have for this one because Efrain "Hencho en Mexico" Escudero is bad.
Prediction: Efrain Escudero via TKO, Round 2.
Could be an excellent pay-per-view this weekend. And if it's not make sure to DVR DREAM 14 airing Saturday morning at 3:00 AM on HD Net.

Technique on Display - "The Handler" Applies a Kimura
A beautiful display of skill and technique here by Dan "The Handler" Hornbuckle at last Thursday's Bellator.
Watch Hornbuckle attack the arm and wait patiently for a moment to explode. He uses his right leg to turn his body out to the correct angle. He stops Steve Carl from escaping with the right leg and clamps down on his head with the left leg and hooks Carl's right arm with his left foot. All while simultaneously using his legs for leverage to free Carl's left arm.
As Carl rolls, Dan stays with him, continuing to drive the Kimura up and taking top position. Now in the mount, with Carl trapped and his arm isolated, Hornbuckle is free to apply fight ending pressure.
With the win, Hornbuckle sets himself up for a welterweight final against Olympian, Ben Askren. Winner to fight Eddie Alvarez for the welterweight title.

THE RUN DOWN
Well, after being out of commission for a short while I ought to catch up on what happened.Sunday, May 9, 2010
Bits and Pieces
What an interesting night. Here's a run down of all the happenings.-KIMBO was cut after a beatdown from Matt Mitrione. He has not seemed to put any work into mount escapes. Mitrione dominated him from start to finish.
Saturday, May 8, 2010
What a strange night of fights. Just as I thought the card was slowing down, BANG, shocking behavior from a sore-loser and a dominant performance from the rightful champion. Thankfully, the newly crowned champion's performance was a positive exclamation point on the night which could have been tainted. Here's some results.Alan Belcher def. Patrick Cote via Rear Choke. Round 2.
-Belcher was throwing tons of left kicks all over. Belcher hits Cote in the groin and Mario Yamasaki does well to intervene before Belcher attacked again.
-Cote looked like he had a kimura from half guard but Belcher did well to escape.
-Round 2 more of the same from Belcher. In a scramble against the cage, Belcher picks Cote up and slams him face down on the mat. Transitions to the back and locks up the Mata Leon.
Matt Mitrione def. Kimbo Slice via TKO. Round 2.
-Matt outclasses Kimbo. Leg kicks were the recipe to success. Mitrione worked hard for a triangle in Round 1 but couldn't get it.
-Round 2 Mitrione lands more leg kicks. Kimbo is wobbling. Matt tries for an anaconda, can't get it. Moves to mount and hammers away until Dan Mirigliotta steps in to wave it off. Solid performance from Mitrione. He was all smiles from the time he walked out to the cage.
Jeremy Stephens def. Sam Stout via Unanimous Decision.
-Stephens power seemed to stifle Stout's usually technically sound striking. Stephens rocked the Canadian a few times.
-Round 2 Stout attacks Stephen's lead leg with low kick and they're effective. Stout lands a nice body shot and shrugs off a takedown attempt.
-Round 3 was back and forth. Stout attacked the legs effectively. Stephens looked to be hurt from a leg kick but Stout gave up on that attack. He rushed in but couldn't finish Stephens who gets a takedown.
-Good performance from both fighters in this one.
Joe Doerksen def. Tom Lawlor via Rear Choke. Round 2.
-Lawlor dropped Doerksen with a left hook, he pops up and is hit with a right-left for his effort. Tom is teeing off, slips and finishes the round on the mat.
-Round 2, Doerksen lands a left kick-left punch combination. Another left kick, and Lawlor grabs the leg to take him down.
-Immediately, Doerksen takes the back with one hook and ends the fight with the choke.
Marcus Davis def. Jonathan Goulet via TKO. Round 2.
-Solid wrestling from Goulet. Davis tries a guillotine but can't finish it. More good takedowns from Goulet.
-Round 2, Davis lands on Goulet. Jonathan gets back to his feet and Davis puts the hands on him dropping him with a left hook.
Josh Koscheck def. Paul Daley via Unanimous Decision.
-All Koscheck in this one. He looked afraid to stand in the pocket, but I don't blame him. Takedowns galore. Not much action from Koscheck except a few short blows.
-Round 2 was more of the same. Takedown and control. Good transitions but no finishing attempts.
-Round 3 same. The last three and a half minutes were on the mat. Koscheck said something he said, "wasn't too polite." After the bell Daley pushes his way past Dan Mirigoliotta and hits Koscheck with a left hook, opening a cut around Koscheck's eye. (More on this later.)
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua def. Lyoto Machida via TKO. Round 1.
-Leg kick from Shogun, Machida lands a right hand. Machida get s trip takedown, Shogun sweeps and stands.
-Shogun presses Machida to the fence and gets hit with a right hand. He flurries and hurts Machida with a right of his own.
-Shogun lands a not-so-flush right hand to the temple, dropping Machida. He pounces and fires away until he sees Machida is out. Very respectful and dominant performance from Shogun.
Great main event.

BELLATOR - Featherweight Tournament
BELLATOR - Welterweight Tournament
Fighting tonight will be star-on-the-rise, Dan Hornbuckle. Facing off against Tyler Stinson in the welterweight tournament quarter-final, Hornbuckle carries with him a 19-2 record and a four fight win streak, all of which have been finishes. Hornbuckle has not lost in nearly two years.
Tyler Stinson, winner of the Kansas City open tryout, holds a 16-5 record and a three fight win streak, all of which have been finishes. At only 24 years old, Stinson has great potential and could turn out to be a great acquisition for BELLATOR.
This fight could steal the show tonight. Hornbuckle is always game to trade. His head kick KO of Akihiro Gono was unbelievable and I think most fans are looking for something similar.
Two other welterweight tournament bouts will be taking place tonight as Brett Cooper and Steve Carl face off in a quarter-final match up. The final welterweight tournament bout pits Ryan Thomas (handed a loss against Ben Aksren thanks to Referee Dave Smith) against Jacob McClintock.
I predict semi-finals of Askren vs Cooper and Hornbuckle vs McClintock. I think the finals come down to Ben Aksren vs Dan Hornbuckle which has the potential to be F.O.Y.

Shields' Future
Thomas Back In BELLATOR Welterweight Tournament
Ben Askren didn't quite have the choke locked in. Ryan Thomas closed his eyes, waiting for the right moment to pull his head free. Then, the Askren let go of the choke and Referee Dave Smith was left standing over Thomas, waving the fight off.

BELLATOR 14 Results
Pat Curran vs Mike Ricci:
LIGHTWEIGHT BOUT --The cousin of former WEC title contender, Jeff Curran, Pat showed some real skill on his feet. Ricci trained with GPS leading up to the Hardy fight so he had a good camp. Ricci is considerably taller and Curran is stalking him around the cage. He lands a body kick but it's blocked. Ricci not doing much of anything. Curran throws a low kick and then a lead right hand, straight down the pipe. Ricci is out, Curran lands five more on the ground before Dave Smith can intervene.
Winner: Pat Curran by KO, Round 1
Shad Lierly vs Wilson Reis:
FEATHERWEIGHT BOUT -- Entertaining fight here. Lots of top pressure from Lierly and a slick guard game from Reis. Shad lands his jab and Wilson swings for the fences. Reis gets a takedown and transitions from half guard to side control to mount. Lots of scrambling. Lierly gets a nice suplex but Reis takes top position to end the round.
More of the same on the feet. Shad landing more often and Reis swinging for the KO. Lierly gets a takedown and is immediately swept from half guard. Reis continues to pass from full guard, to half, to side control and mount. Very slick transitions.
Lierly lands a nice left hook and the crowd responds. So does Reis, taking Lierly down once again. He passes, but Lierly regains his guard. Another pass and Reis is in position to let his fists fly. He unloads a few shots from the mount, Lierly rolls to protect himself and Reis locks in the rear choke.
Winner: Wilson Reis by Rear Choke, Round 1
Ben Askren vs Ryan Thomas:
WELTERWEIGHT BOUT -- Askren comes out looking to trade. He eats a one-two, shoots and gets the takedown. Askren falls right into a triangle but fights his way out of it. Askren grabs head control and looks like he's setting up either a Peruvian Necktie or an Anaconda choke, he loses his grip on the roll and goes for what looks like an arm-in guillotine. Thomas's eyes are closed but he doesn't tap or go out. Referee Dave Smith waves the fight off. Terrible Stoppage.
Winner: Ben Aksren by Guillotine Choke, Round 1
Toby Imada vs James Krause:
LIGHTWEIGHT BOUT -- Both guys swinging away and not even close to connecting. Finally Krause lands a body kick. Imada trips Krause to the mat. He tries to pass but gets swept. In the scramble Imada ends up on top in half guard. Krause gets on Imada's back and tries to roll forward. Imada looks for an omoplata. Krause has none of it and stands. Imada looks for a heel hook, but Krause strikes the body and head. He misses a huge right hand. Imada threatening the leg again. Round ends.
Krause is landing shots from his feet. Imada gets a body lock and muscles Krause to the mat. Krause sweeps and grabs a single. Imada isolates an arm looking for an omoplata, then transitions to an armbar. Very slick.
Winner: Toby Imada by Armbar, Round 2

The Demolition Man
What to do with Silva?
Long story short, the main event was an embarrassment.
On ESPN's "Rome is Burning" Dana White announced that the middleweight kingpin, Anderson Silva, will face off against Team Quest fighter, and Oregon State legislative District 37 candidate, Chael Sonnen. The bout is tentatively scheduled for August 7th in Salt Lake City, Utah.
White, who was clearly frustrated by Silva's performance last Saturday, told Jim Rome that "Silva would be cut" if he produced another performance like the ones against Maia or Leites. While cutting the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world seems like a bad idea, it is a testament to how badly Silva damaged his reputation. While I believe they are just fighting words from White, and maybe it will motivate Silva to inflict a little more damage on his next opponent.
Sonnen's resume is not lacking much, he was a Division I All-American at University of Oregon, a two-time Greco Roman National Champion, and holds wins over Dan Miller, Jason Miller, Yushin Okami, Paulo Filho and most recently Nate Marquardt.
He has also been outspoken about his dislike of Silva, claiming that Silva speaking through his manager/interpreter, Ed Soares, is his way of avoiding contact with fans and that Silva, in fact, speaks perfect English. Sonnen will surely have lots to say leading up to this fight, so I think we will be in store for a quality display of violence from Silva.
Bellator Strikes Again
Monday, April 12, 2010
Preview: Strikeforce: Nashville
Dan Henderson (25-7) vs Jake Shields (24-4-1):
The only man to simultaneously hold two PRIDE titles, Henderson has fought the best in the world including wins over Mike Bisping, Rich Franklin, Wanderlei Silva, Mirko 'Cro Cop', Vitor Belfort, Rodrigo Nogueira, Ricardo Arona, Renzo Gracie, Renato 'Babalu' Sobral, Gilbert Yvel, and Carlos Newton. To put it bluntly, the guy has fought everyone and made out pretty well. He's been finished before, but only by the Nogueira brothers and Anderson Silva. (All from Team Black House...strange.)
Jake Shields is the reigning Strikeforce middleweight champion and an accomplished jiu jitsu black belt. He won the title with a decision victory over Jason 'Mayhem' Miller in November. Shields' resume is also a Who's Who of MMA elite including wins over, Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley, Carlos Condit, Yushin Okami, Dave Menne and Hayato Sakurai. He is riding a thirteen fight win streak and has not be finished since March 2000.
This is an interesting match up because if Hendo gets the takedown, Shields will be a threat off his back. If Shields can get the takedown, expect a smothering top game and slick transitions. Hendo will surely be loading up the bomb of a right hand, so Jake...circle right! (See: Mike Bisping) As good as Shields has been, I don't know if he'll be able to get past the hard-nosed Hendo.
My prediction: Dan Henderson by Unanimous Decision
Muhammed Lawal (6-0) vs Gegard Mousasi (28-2-1):
Although "King Mo" only has six fights to his credit, he is dangerous. He was an All-American wrestling standout at Oklahoma State, winning the Big 12 title in 2003. He is a talented athlete and deserving of a title shot, especially with his star potential. As Mousasi put it, "He comes from wrestling and has put in his time in combat sports." With five of his six victories coming by way of TKO or KO, Lawal has dangerous hands. His athleticism is impressive and his desire to fight top competition is admirable. Plus, he is an entertainer. His trash talk leading up to the fight has been priceless. Check out the "So Much Excitement" post for a link to a little exchanged between Mo and Gegard.
Gegard Mousasi is outstanding at only 24 years old. Riding a fifteen fight win streak, the Dutch-Armenian fighter has been unstoppable. With seventeen wins by TKO or KO and nine by submission he is dangerous everywhere. He has fought at heavyweight and said he reached 230 lbs during camp. Very focused and relaxed in the cage, Mousasi is dangerous for any opponent.
